What is at stake? The SAVE America Act 

The SAVE America Act does two things: (1) it requires proof of citizenship before someone can register to vote and (2) it requires valid photo ID before someone can cast a ballot.

The bill was passed in the House in February. It currently sits on the desk of Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) who has the power to put the bill on the Senate schedule for a vote.

For weeks, Thune has refused to do so even though 53 senators (a majority) have raised their hands in support. He claims since there aren’t 60 votes, there’s nothing to be done. But a group of senators led by Senator Mike Lee (R-AZ) want to use an old-school tactic: force Democrats to speak continuously on the Senate floor to delay the bill. It’s called the talking filibuster. Once Democrats stop talking and cede the floor, Republicans could pass the measure with just 51 votes.

Thune says that won’t work either, claiming it’s a math and stamina problem. A talking filibuster under current rules would require 51 GOP senators in or near the chamber at all times, while Democrats would need just one member to hold the floor and could rotate among themselves. More critically, Republicans would need to stick together to kill every single Democrat amendment — and there are at least four GOP senators who are a "no" or leaning "no" on that approach.

2.     Call and write your U. S. Senators.

Remind Michigan's senators that both proof of citizenship and voter ID are overwhelming supported by their constituents; even a majority of Democrat voters support valid ID. Gallup found 84% of Americans support requiring photo ID to vote, including 67% of Democrats.
